Crime is everywhere and it threatens individuals personally. Police forces are strained to respond to growing incidents of violence and theft, and people have decided to look after themselves and their own protection. In response to the need for self-defence, a market has sprouted, and there is a variety of personal security devices available to consumers.
You may have decided to buy a little something you hope will help you to feel safe, a little item that you hope you'll never have the need to use but still feel you need to carry. The first thing to do is learn about what device is best for you and which one you should be purchasing. A little research will help you better understand responsibilities, as well as what individual devices offer in the ways of protection. A simple list of dos and don'ts can give help with the necessary information you'll need to ensure what you're thinking of buying is legal, trustworthy, and safe.
Don't purchase anything as serious as a stun gun or Taser from an unauthorized vendor. These devices may look attractive and be reasonably priced at the local flea market or corner discount store, but chances are you'll have no recourse if the item doesn't work properly. Never buy anything without getting a receipt, either. It's extremely important to have contact information about the vendor and always check the vendor's status with the Better Business Bureau before considering any purchase. Also, watch out for any company that makes frenzied claims about the rates of crime in today's world and how they'll save you from it. These companies might be trying to deflect your attention away from the quality of their product. Of course, never try out any personal security device on someone else or in a mock trial. If you use a personal alarm once too often without needing to, you might find that, like the boy who cried wolf, no one responds when you're using the security device in a real situation.
A personal safety device is just that - personal. Which device you decide to purchase is entirely up to you, but do make sure to investigate state regulations and city bylaws concerning usage of the device, as well as the legalities and noise restrictions of personal alarms. Also, check the restrictions on things like mace, pepper spray, and stun guns, as some states may not allow the use of these items. Knowing where you stand legally can make all the difference in keeping you out of trouble or landing you in hot water, even if you just want to protect yourself.

Personal Security Facts & Tips
Battery operated alarms are the smallest and easiest to carry, able to clip onto a keychain. Even though many models pulse, the sound is usually very loud and distinct. There is another option: Gas alarms are much shriller and can be activated just by pushing the device against your thigh. There's no need to fumble for something to press. You can check the gas alarm by shaking the canister, too.
