Mace Pepper Spray - How To Use
By Personal Security Editor
In this article, we explain how to properly handle pepper spray so that you stay safe ...
One of the most popular personal safety devices for law enforcement officers and civilians alike is Mace pepper spray. This easy to carry mechanism has proven to be highly effective against attackers. With the press of a finger, the spray disables your assailant by dispelling a teargas agent that makes it difficult to breathe and causes painful burning in the eyes, nose, mouth and skin. If you plan to buy pepper spray and carry it on you for self defense, then you should know that the spray is very sensitive. In this article, we'll explain how to properly handle pepper spray so that you stay safe.
Knowing how to handle any kind of pepper spray, including dog pepper spray, is critical. If you feel threatened, then carry your spray in your hand, slip your thumb under the safety cover and be ready to spray the assailant by pressing down on the red button with your thumb. The safety cover will prevent access to the red button if you hold the unit backward. The shape of your self defense spray will enable you to know, even in the dark or in a stressful situation, when the device is properly oriented and ready for use.
If you have to use your pepper spray, then point and spray short bursts at the facial area of your assailant. When actuated, a stream of tear gas and oleoresin capsicum will issue from the unit a distance of approximately 10-12 feet, depending on the pressure of the defensive spray and wind conditions. Avoid spraying directly into the wind if you can to avoid the spray being blown back at you. Use the self defense spray when it is in the upright position, otherwise it may not function properly then or afterwards.
Once you have sprayed your attacker, get away and contact the police! Do not try to take the attacker into custody. If you intend to rely on Mace pepper spray as a defense, then you should test the functioning of the spray periodically by discharging one or two bursts outdoors in a safe area, away from all persons and animals in the vicinity. Take care that you do not exhaust the contents of the unit you intend to rely upon.
Mace pepper spray can prevent you from being seriously harmed, yet is not as fail-proof as owning a legal, taser stun gun. Besides being able to purchase pepper spray, civilians can also buy tasers, although they are not as powerful as the tasers police use. If you ever find yourself in a situation when you must use a spray, keep in mind that you must get away from your attacker as quickly as possible. Of course, prevention is key, so be careful out there.

Personal Security Facts & Tips
Battery operated alarms are the smallest and easiest to carry, able to clip onto a keychain. Even though many models pulse, the sound is usually very loud and distinct. There is another option: Gas alarms are much shriller and can be activated just by pushing the device against your thigh. There's no need to fumble for something to press. You can check the gas alarm by shaking the canister, too.
