Safety concerns on a business trip or vacation are different from those around the home. Knowing what to do when you're out and about isn't always something we think about, as the issues isn't as popular as automobile security or as trendy as identity theft, but it bears some notice. We should all know something about keeping safe while we're traveling, and the rules are easy to implement.

First, you should learn how to secure your home while you will be away. Notify one trusted person of your travel plans, but don't let too many people know you'll be gone from home. Although most of your coworkers are people you know and trust, it only takes one set of ears passing through the office to hear something they shouldn't. Arrange for someone to pick up your mail, newspapers, and magazines. Clutter around the mailbox or front door is an obvious tip-off to thieves. Have a neighbor mow your lawn or shovel the snow during your absence. It's also a good idea to have someone park in the driveway while you're gone to make it look like someone is always home. Ask a friend to check and replace light bulbs, as a burned-out light is a dead giveaway there is no one home. You should also check that all home insurance policies are up to date and adequate before you travel.

There are security tips while you're on the road as well. Most importantly, know the schedule for the bus or plane you're taking. Sitting around an airport or bus station for longer than is necessary can make you a potential target. Stay alert when using public transportation and always try to sit near the aisles or doors. Dress down if you can. While you may feel festive or want to leave a serious business impression, it's safer not to wear your best clothes or a lot of jewelry when en route.

There are a few things to keep in mind once you get to your hotel. The natives might be a friendly lot, speaking of places to visit or restaurants to try, but take care. Some people might be luring you into a trap. Don't be too friendly to others, either. Entertaining strangers in your room is often a mistake. Don't talk about your room number in the lobby either, and try to remember to get a room on the third floor. That's high enough to be above street level crime but not out of reach of fire truck ladders.
