Telephone manuals were created as quick references for anyone trying to locate the number of a person or a company. Some people opt out of being listed in these directories to protect their privacy. The telephone directory is a resource that best exemplifies adherence to the telephone numbering plan that has been enacted and applied on a worldwide scale. This includes adapting to numbering standards including area codes, country codes and access codes.
The Purpose of Telephone Manuals
There are three common kinds of telephone directories, although not all places may have them. The White Pages shows an alphabetical listing of the residents in a location. The Yellow Pages include businesses and companies arranged by category or service provided. The Black Pages are reverse directories where you locate the number of a person or company through their address.
Aside from the listing of all the names, addresses and phone numbers of both people and companies in a given geographical boundary, the telephone directory also contains other kinds of information. This may include instructions on how to make long distance and international calls.
Contact numbers in case of emergencies are also listed in telephone manuals. These include the telephone numbers of the police, fire station, nearby hospitals and utilities providers.
Although other data may seem unrelated, the telephone directory is supposed to be an easily accessible guide. Because of this, it may also contain some maps of nearby landmarks and important places that you may need to reach. Some telephone directories also contain a list of the postal codes in the United States or Canada in case you need to send correspondence through the mail.
Most telephone directories are funded by the telecommunications provider or paid for by the telephone subscriber who wishes to have a copy for their home. In some cases, telephone manuals will also contain advertising to supplement the cost of its production. Advertising will usually be for local companies and establishments in the area covered by the telephone directory.
