If you want to search for an address by phone number, you need to consult with the ‘Black Pages’ or a reverse directory. However, there have been many recent disputes regarding allowing these reverse directories to exist since they can be used to damage a person's reputation, bring about instances of identity theft and fraud and impinge on the privacy and security of individuals.

Search for Address by Phone Number - Why It Could Be Illegal

The information that can be found in these reverse directories has been placed in three forms. First, it was transferred to a CD-ROM that was commercially distributed and made available to consumers. The second way in which reverse directories are available is through a telephone service number. You call the number, provide the address or phone number and you will be given the name of the individual or company that the number is registered to. Also gaining popularity is through online services, the third way in which you can utilize the functions of these reverse directories.

Court cases have impinged upon the further distribution of the CD-ROM version of a reverse directory since subscribers have not given their express permission (i.e., allowing that their customer details be revealed in this manner). Subscribers who reside within a given zip code could also be searched through these reverse directories, placing at risk the lives of these customers who could be easily visited or contacted by strangers.

Also related to these reverse directories would be people searches, which also function in the same manner. You can usually find an address in a map and you will also be able to locate the neighbors of an individual through these people searches. You can browse through several categories and provide as little or as much details as you can until you get to the information that you want. This has made it easier for anyone who wishes to steal someone's identity or learn more details about a person that could be detrimental to that person's well-being.

Reverse lookup companies exist in the United States, Canada, Norway, Sweden and other countries in the world. However, as more people become opposed to this service, it could be eliminated entirely before it spreads to other places.
